How to
Kill Termites
How to kill termites is one of
the more frequent questions that people ask. A recent survey
revealed that there could be 13 to 14 termite colonies in one acre
of land. For the homeowner, this means that you can have up to four
termite colonies right under your home and you’re not even aware of
it.
The damage that a single termite colony is
already too much. But three or four? That’s reason to be alarmed
and be very cautious about the structural integrity of your home.
So how to kill termites should be the primary concern of every
homeowner. In this article, we will deal especially with the most
common method of how to kill termites – that is, liquid pesticide
treatment.
Note that the method, as described here, is only
applicable to ground termites. Dry wood termites are a completely
different species, distinct from ground or subterranean termites.
And as such how to kill termites of that kind involves a completely
different set of methods.
How to
Kill Termites: STEPS
The first thing you need to know about how to
kill termites is your goal. It’s not more on killing termites but
more about providing a barrier that repels termites and in so
doing, protect your home from infestation.
Now, in order to provide a termite barrier that
is large enough to protect the entire home, you need lots of
termite pesticide. Specifically, you need 100 to 200 gallons of
pesticide solution to cover the entire ground surrounding your
home.
This is a lot of work for a typical homeowner
who usually does not have equipment such as pressure sprayers that
pest control companies use. But with a 5 gallon bucket, you can do
a much of the work without spending so much of your dollars paying
for pest control services.
Step
#1: Dig
Since ground termites live underground, the
first step involved on how to kill termites is to dig. You can use
a pick axe or a trenching tool for this, or any other equipment
used for digging. Make sure that the trench you are digging is
about 6 inches wide and 6 inches deep. They should be located
directly against the foundation or anywhere else where the ground
rises up to the structure.
Step
#2: Fill it Up
After making the trench, get your 5-gallon
bucket and fill it up to four gallons with the pesticide solution.
This is the most important step on how to kill termites so pay
close attention. Pour the pesticide solution unto each trench three
times, to make a total of 12 gallons per trench.
Step
#3: Cover it Up
After filling up the trench with pesticide, time
for you to cover it up with dirt from your dig.
